Shift Stand-in: The on-call officer for a particular position, who would assume that position if the primary was unable.  Stand-in officers also fill the position when the primary officer is off his weekly duty rotation (I.E. on their days-off).  When the ship goes to red alert, the stand-in goes to active stand-by (near to their position) incase the primary officer is incapacitated.

Emergency Situations: When an emergency situation occurs during the Beta or Gamma shifts, Alpha shift members will go to active duty and take their primary positions.
